Pumpkin Scones and a GIVEAWAY
Happy Friday to all you wonderful people out there!
I’m feeling generous today and I want to treat one lucky reader today! I’m GIVING AWAY A BASKET OF BAKED GOODS!
Why, yes… I am that desperate for audience participation. As if this weren’t a given, considering I write a blog and have 14 followers… But who’s counting?
But back to the giveaway! I want to hear from YOU! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY DESSERT? All you have to do is LEAVE A COMMENT ON THIS POST WITH YOUR ANSWER and you will be entered to win a basket full of homemade goodies baked by yours truly, The Bite-Sized Baker.
The giveaway begins today and ends Sunday, October 16th at 11:59PM. The winner will be announced on Monday’s post and I’ll collect your information so I can feed you baked goods. Yes, it’s that easy.
But do not fear, the fun doesn’t stop at the giveaway! I have something to satisfy your sweet tooth too! Pumpkin Scones! I made this recipe twice in ONE day because they were so good that I had to make more to share with more people.
Yeah, that good.
Pumpkin Scones slightly adapted from Pennies On A Platter:
Pumpkin Scones:
2 cups all-purpose flour
7 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon ground ginger
6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 1/2″ cubes
½ cup canned pumpkin
3 tablespoons heavy cream
1 large egg
Sugar Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
Spice Glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Scones Directions:
- Preheat oven to 425˚F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Combine the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Use a pastry blender or food processor to cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly in texture and resembles coarse cornmeal.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the pumpkin, half and half, and egg. Fold into the dry ingredients until barely combined. It is very important not to over mix the batter. At this point it should still be kind of dry and crumbly.
- Loosely form the dough into a ball. Pat it into a 1-inch thick, 9″x3″ rectangle onto a lightly floured surface.
- Use a sharp knife to slice the dough through it’s width into three equal portions. Cut each section diagonally to produce 6 triangular slices of dough. (Or, you can slice “X’s” in each section to form 12 triangles.
- Place each slice on prepared baking sheet and bake for 14 – 16 minutes, until the scones are golden brown.
- Let cool completely on wire rack, and then continue with glaze directions below.
Sugar Glaze directions:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. If it’s too runny, add more sugar. If too thick, add a little more milk until reaching desired consistency. Brush glaze over the top of each cooled scone. Let harden before proceeding to the spiced glaze directions.
Spiced Glaze Directions:
- After the sugar glaze hardens, combine the spiced icing ingredients. Use a whisk to drizzle over each scone and allow to dry before serving.

These look amazing! I’d love to win some goodies….
My favorite holiday desssert is my sister-in-law’s Christmas cookies because their biggest ingredient is pure love. Our family has egg allergies, nut allergies, milk allergies, diabetics .. you name the dietary quirk and one of us has it. Somehow, my sister-in-law bakes Christmas cookies for everyone!! There are plates of assorted milk-free cookies and other plates egg-free and plates of everything for everyone — the only thing she doesn’t is anything that is taste-free. They are all beautiful and delicious and, as much as anything for me, embodies the meaning of Christmas.
Pumpkin Scones are wonderful- will have to try this recipe-looks delicious.
Just might be pumpkin cheesecake !
My favorite holiday dessert, which I make only at Christmas, is an old Jacques Pepin recipe (from what I believe was his first cookbook) for a Chocolate Hazelnut Dacquoise. Heavenly when made with excellent chocolate (Valrhona or Scharffen Berger).
This looks great! I have a pumpkin in the fridge I’m roasting today, maybe I’ll use it for these!
I really love deep dish apple pie. A necessary second is sweet potato pie. My mom is from North Carolina, can’t you tell?
Hmmm…..this is so difficult, but I guess my favorite holiday treat is sweet potato pudding.
Favorite holiday dessert: anything chocolate, pecan pie, or chocolate pecan pie!
I love a good classic pumpkin pie!! Plain and simple with a dollop of whip cream!! But, btw these scones look like they are calling my name, so I am going to have to make some of these!!
Meringues!! Peppermint with the mini chocolate chips are really good, amaretto are fabulous, and chocolate . . Can almost call them air . . and deny the calories!!

Favorite holiday dessert ~ I don’t actually like pie but I like to take the pie crust roll it out and put butter, cinnamon and sugar on it…roll it up and then cut into little 1/4 inch pieces. Bake them up and I can’t stop eating them. No one else every sees that I make them because I eat them all myself
That is ok because they like pie!
My favorite holiday dessert is struffoli……………little fried dough balls mounded along with almonds and walnuts…………the mound is drizzled with honey. My nana and mom used to make this only at Christmas time. Oh how I miss the smell and taste of this treat!

Apple, cranberry pie with vanilla ice cream is an all time favorite of mine.
My favorite holiday dessert is a cranberry, vanilla chip and pecan tart that I always make for Thanksgiving. Unless there is something made of pumpkin, then that is my favorite that day.
susitravl(at)gmail(dot)com
Pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling. YUM!! Also, the little Russian Tea Cakes rolled in Powdered Sugar. MMMMMMM.
My favorite holiday treat is date nut pudding made from grandma’s recipe – handwritten in pencil on a scrap of paper with a note at the bottom to cook the celery and onion before adding it to the turkey stuffing. Only someone who cooked with grandma could decipher this recipe!
Never met a dessert that I didn’t like. If I could dessert would be my entire meal !!!
Pumpkin pie with caramel pecan pie a very, very close second…
My favorite holiday dessert is more often considered a breakfast, but I think it’s a great way to finish a meal….peppermint hot chocolate and warm cinnamon rolls….mmm – I might have to make some of those today….
Those pumpkin scones may be my new favorite holiday dessert…though homemade apple pie was at the top of the list until now. My mother’s family is from the Netherlands, where pies were invented. I acutally refuse to eat store bought pies because of her talents!
Homemade chocolate fudge with walnuts.
Growing up, cinnamon rolls were always a holiday/special occasion treat. Wow, waking up to the air filled with cinnamon, ginger, clove… running down to the kitchen to see what friends & family had assembled to watch those rolls come out of the oven all gooey, sticky, warm and perfect. Uh-oh I think I need to go make a batch.

The butterscotch haystacks my mother made every Christmas. Simple recipe, no big deal, but oh the memories!
my mom’s apple square!
My mom made an old fashioned steamed pudding from a recipe handed down through her mother. Mom and grandma made it is old square tin tea cans. It is dense, delicious and dark with molasses and brown sugar; filled with nuts and raisins. Re-warmed just before serving and topped with generous portion of yummy, buttery, hard vanilla sauce. It is my favorite Holiday dessert not only for the wonderful taste; but the rememberance of generations of tradition. My mom just died this month; I think I will make it again this holiday season.
Made your pumplin scones last night and brought them into work. They were a big hit. One co-worker remarked how she loved how you could really taste the pumpkin and not cinnamon like so many other pumpkin recipes. She aslo said it was just the right amount of sweetness-not overpowering, just right.
Looking forward to more adventures in the pumpkin recipes!
Those Cranberry bars at Starbucks (think you had a similiar recipe and it looked yummy):) –love all your recipes!! They make me hungry just looking at the pictures!!!
